Our History - 75 Years and Counting

Our Founders

Rex Smith

Having served during WWII in Italy delivering mail to the front lines, Rex returned home with a strong sense of discipline and purpose. He began farming in Queensville, Ontario embracing hard work with an entrepreneurial spirit.

In 1949, he began his journey in the insurance industry founding Rex Smith Insurance out of his basement, laying the foundation that would eventually evolve into SWB Insurance. Having grown up on a farm (plus running a farm himself), he purchased an insurance business selling strictly farm insurance.  His unique perspective allowed him to connect with clients on a personal level, offering knowledgeable, trustworthy service tailored to the needs of fellow farmers.

Rex was known for his kindness. People describe him as someone who would gladly give you the shirt off his back. Often, he would volunteer at charity fundraisers as a chef.

In 1987 Rex retired, selling his shares to Reg Bateman and his son Peter Smith.

Charlie Williams

Charlie Williams

Charlie began his career as a farmer before transitioning into the insurance industry. In 1952, he founded his own agency.

In the early 1960s, Rex met Charlie Williams of Newmarket (an insurance agent who shared both his professional interest and his understanding of the farming community). Together they merged their two businesses and established Smith & Williams Insurance Agency Ltd. in 1977.

Charlie loved to discuss investments. He wasn’t afraid to take risks – he just chose them wisely. He approached opportunities with confidence and care.

He was a life member of the Newmarket Lions Club and a member of the Probus Club. He believed in giving back to the community with time and financial contributions.

Charlie passed away in 2021 in his 95th year, leaving behind a legacy of entrepreneurship, thoughtful leadership and a commitment to the community.

Peter Smith

In 1974 Peter Smith, Rex’s son, joined the firm. He had graduated from Wilfred Laurier University with an Honours Business degree in 1973 and had worked with Gulf Oil from his graduation until he joined the firm. He originally had been doing a consulting job for Rex and Charlie. He later became a partner/shareholder in 1976. He had his AIIC and completed the FIIC and CIB by 1982.

Peter likes building and creating, and eventually he wanted to change career paths. He knew he wanted to do other things, specifically around learning. He had been taking several courses in the Chicago area on Learning Styles and Neurology of learning.

Peter completed a Master's in self-directed learning and worked as an educational consultant to the IBAO. He taught hundreds of new brokers over a 10-year period and developed many of the continuing education and management courses for brokers in Ontario. He developed the first distance-learning course on CD-ROMs, available to anyone in Ontario who wanted to write the RIBO exam.  This was fully approved and sanctioned by RIBO.  It could have been fully online but the internet was only beginning to be available in those days.

Reg and Chris Bateman

Reg & Chris Bateman

Reg Bateman joined the firm as an employee on February the 19th, 1979, bringing with him a strong academic foundation and a sense of ambition. He had graduated from Laurier with an honours business degree in 1975, followed by an MBA degree from York University and Osgood Hall in 1976. With an eagerness for entrepreneurialism and hard work (handed down from his own father), Reg thought he might want to explore owning an insurance agency. He had known Rex & Peter personally, so he approached them to see what the job entailed. They suggested that Reg work for them to see how he liked it. Nine months later they offered him a partnership which he accepted. Reg is deeply committed to his community. He spent 9 years on the Southlake Hospital Board and co-founded a golf tournament that has raised millions of dollars for the foundation. On October 1st, 1981, RIBO came into existence. At that point, Smith Williams & Bateman Insurance Brokerage Ltd. was formally established. Peter and Reg eventually bought Rex and Charlie out (Rex in 1987 and Charlie earlier – however Charlie continued selling life insurance until he later retired). Chris Bateman, Reg’s wife, joined SWB as an employee in 1986 as the Marketing Manager & Personnel Manager. At the end of 1988, Chris bought out Peter. Reg and Chris have each owned 50% ever since. She understands the value of hard work. In a world that constantly evolves, she adapts. She is a woman of action who raised 4 children while growing a business. She is also heavily involved with IODE, a women’s charity. She served as the National President of the IODE for a 2-year term. Beyond the spreadsheets and the strategy meetings, there’s another side to her: one that finds peace in knitting. She understands that something meaningful takes time, care and attention to detail. Together, they had 4 children: Courtney, Aynsley, Spencer and Harrison. All four of them have found careers in the insurance industry.

Harrison Bateman’s Legacy

In June of 2024, sadly, Harrison passed away at the age of 33 unexpectedly from a heart attack while running a 12.6 km. obstacle course race. He was a devoted son, brother, uncle, friend and co-worker.

Working alongside him was truly a privilege. He brought kindness, humour and a genuine spirit to every day, making a lasting impact on everyone around him. He had a natural ability to make people laugh.

Whether it was a quick joke, a funny comment, or just his presence, he made the workplace feel more connected and enjoyable. He was always there to lend a hand. He is deeply missed, always remembered and forever appreciated. His legacy will live on in his 6 nieces.
